a escola
so first of all.....happy birthday keke!!!!!!!! (yesterday) abraços! (hugs!)
anyway.....let's see, what have I done the past couple days....
wednesday, catarina and I went to the mall with her friend diogo, looked around a bit, then went to see "You, me, and dupree" in english w/portuguese subtitles, so I was able to understand it. It was ok; funny, but not really my type of movie. That night the grandparents came over (Xuxu's parents) for dinner; they were really nice and I got to speak a bit of french, because Xuxu's mother is half french, and her father speaks french, too.
Thursday we went to the school again (and somewhere in the meantime, I think it was wednesday, finally got the bus pass) to figure out some stuff for catarina's classes. i got my schedule, which goes something like this:
monday (8:00-1:00?) History, english, philosophy.
tuesday (9:45-1:00?) portuguese, history. then (2:00-4:30?) EMRC (don't know what it is), and math
wednesday (8:00-1:00?) Math, english, history. then (3:00-4:30?) geography.
thursday (8:00-1:00?) philosophy, portuguese, geography.
friday (8:00-1:00?) math, gym, geography.
i like my schedule, i think. I still need to get my school books, though. hm...
anyway, after going to school, we went back home and i basically relaxed here all day. had dinner, then Xuxu and miguel left for madeira (island off the coast of portugal and africa, portuguese territory) for the weekend. I wish I could go with them!
yesterday was my first day of school. we drove to school, then I talked to anne-lise (with AFS, from norway). we are in the same class which is good--though we need to branch out and make portuguese friends! also talked to lisa, from germany (AFS). went to math, gym, geography. basicallly the whole time the teacher talked, and I didn't understand. hm...between classes I got to talk to some other people from school, which was good. I hope I can make friends fast.
AFter school, I invited anne-lise over for lunch (almoço). we played cards, talked about exchange, and I realized how much i needed to adapt to fit in here. my personality is so different from the portuguese! if i can adapt, I'm going to learn so much!
Exchange is going to be so much mental work, but i think if i succeed it will be so fun!
I hope everything is going well at home!
adeus!
ps. I know it says I posted this at 6 AM, but the times are wrong...that's US time, hehe.

I can't imagine going to class and not understanding a word the teacher says. That must be horrible! Mine all speak academictalk, which is pretty bad, but at least it's kind of english...
"In light of this capitalist discourse, the possiblity of advancement for the subaltern is, of course, minimal" =P

You'll adapt to the language difference in classes pretty quickly, I think. I had the same problem when I went to school in Isreal, but I was able to learn quickly.

We are enjoying your journal.
Have a great time.
All are well here. Clara and Everett join us this weekend. Clara remembers you fondly and well. Everett thinks he does because Clara does, or perhaps he really does--he has an amazing mind.
Sallie has not yet mastered the art of the blogf--I am struggling, but we read you every morning now.
Love,
Paps (Ed) and Sallie
