Testes acabados!

Tests done! yay! except for one in educação física on the 17th. But that's ok.
What have I been doing? The past week was pretty stressyful, because of school work. I think I'm learning so much without school, I don't need it. But I'm not going to slack off, just try to not focus all my time on school like I do at home.
anyway, sunday...in the morning went to the palácio nacional de queluz. Really cool! Kinda like versailles (versalhes in portuguese)--Makes me want to live in a palace! went with Xuxu, Catarina, e Elizabeth. Came home, studied filosofia, I think.
Tests--filosofia, matemática today. filosofia was kinda hard, but ok. math was easy in terms of understanding, but I'm still getting used to what the teachers want. Writing and showing work and everything. I turned in my individual assignment for math today, 2 pages. Saw the others in their special portfolio things, all elaborate. hm. so i guess I just need to figure out what teachers want when.
On monday I tried to meet up with my applications advisor from AFS USA (she lives in portugal). ended up wandering around a lot, then deciding to meet another day because i couldn't find where she was. So went and bought a text book for portuguese in the Baixa Chiado, a cool district in the center of Lisbon. Shops and things.
Monday night was the birthday dinner of host cousin Zé Maria (José Maria--when I first heard it I thought it was an absurd name, but now it's quite normal). Still kinda awkward with host cousins my age, but getting used to it. I realize that I need to learn a lot about how to be social! Didn't work on that as much as the "average" american teen. like what to talk about, what to do with people..... today I'm not being very social, but tonight I'm going to try out a band practice (9-11--it's portuguese time!) It's an "everyone can join" band, so I don't know how challenging it is, but I'll give it a try. convenient, so I hope it works out. tomorrow I'm going to work on a project with some girls from my class, then hopefully I'll give girl scouts a try.
um...tuesday I forget what I did. Oh Halloween! Decorated the table for my host family (pix on my pic site!), went to belly dance. hehe.
Wednesday was O dia de todos os santos (All saint's day)--day off! yay! I worked in the morning. took a walk with Xuxu along the coast, which is cool. Can't do that back home! Lunch. Worked more. Anne-lise came over to work on our portuguese project. worked more. lots of schoolwork ugh. american agriculture--presenting on wednesday because the thumb drive didn't work friday. not the best, but I think it'll be ok. then went with Elizabeth to see "marie antoinette" which was pretty good, though a little too "american" for me, if that made any sense. like speaking really modern english and having electric guitar songs at a masked ball in the 1700s. hehe.
Came home, dinner, work. bed late.
yesterday--more belly dance. I think the class is turning out to be mostly older women. but that's ok--I'll try to make friends! It's so hard--isolating parts of your body! oy!
Home, dinner--Joana had friends over, so i got to meet them.
Today I went to school--math test, gym, geography. substitute teacher, but the system is different than in the US. We didn't really have to do any work. So Anne-Lise and I talked to a girl from 12th grade who was very nice.
Came home, lunch....being a bit unsocial, but it's necessary sometimes. good while I'm getting used to being social.
I'm hopefully having a b-day party on the 10th (next friday). but I talked to my host dad and he said that we might do somethign that weekend; could i change the date. I don't know! I've already started asking some people from my class to come. hm... i'm thinking we'll play some "typical american games" (thanks for those who gave me ideas--any more?), eat dinner, watch a movie maybe. Not much, but I hope it's fun.
28 days of school until christmas vacation! yay! The mall where I went to see "marie antoinette" was all decked out for christmas. already! yikeys! made me kinda excited, then I realized that I still have a while to go. that's ok, I'll enjoy autumn!
ttfn!
beijinhos!

  • Clara, Sallie and I are in the kitchen at Oakdale on a cold fall day (we went for a long walk-lovely but chilly).

I read Clara your blog for this week. She thinks you are having to do too much school work, but the belly dancing sounds fun.

We sent off something for you on the 10th and hope that it will arrive in time.

We had a lot of trick or treaters on holloween and ran out of candy. Clara and Everett came. Clara was a witch and Everett a lyon. They spent last night with us. Clara did not miss her mom--Everett and I have the same nap schedule, thank heavens.

    Love,

Ed, Sallie, Clara (Everett is asleep--I just woke up ...)

  • Happy Birthday.

I hope we are among the first to wish you the best.

It is election day here and we are anxiously (or at least I am) awaiting the results.

    Enjoy your day:

  • Happy Birthday Lydia! I hope that your party on Friday works out, and good luck with school and the dance class! I was never able to do any sort of belly dancing thing... the whole isolation thing is impossible for someone as uncoordinated as me. I hope you enjoy it, though! We have a band concert tonight, and I wish you were back here to be in it! I hope you're enjoying your new social life! Have a great autumn!
