Esta frio! (It's cold!)

So to everyone who thought Portugal was all sun and beaches... it's actually quite cold here! We still have sun and beautiful clear skies a lot of the time (and rain too), but it is quite cold. Not cold below freezing like at home, but today I went to school with two shirts, a sweater, a fleece, and my winter jacket. Those classrooms are so cold!!!
So I haven't updated in a while! feels like i'm always saying that. What did I do last week?
Friday I went to a really yummy (and slightly expensive, but worth it) pastelaria with Lisa, Anne-Lise, and Debi for lanche (afternoon snack). Then to Lisa's house to watch a couple episodes of the OC, which I actually enjoyed. I went home for dinner, then returned to Lisa's and we went to a cool cultural center/theater to see an opera called Wozzeck. It was in German with Portuguese on an electronic screen above the stage. I understood most of the portuguese and about 3 words of German. It was interesting--very good singing, but I don't know if the theme was my type--murder and infidelity and poverty and things. But good...a bit confusing.
Saturday morning I went with Xuxu, Miguelinho and Catarina to Óbidos, a really cool midieval town about an hour away. Beautiful narrow streets and ancient walls and a castle and things...quite cool. We had lunch there and walked around. I took lots of pix too which I'll hopefully put up soon.
After that I went to scouts where I didn't do much....just kind of sat while they planned an activity. Liz (california) came over for dinner and then we watched almost six hours of the first season of friends and stayed up until 4 AM...crazy. Woke up at 12h30, watched more friends and made crepes yum.
That night we had a family dinner em casa de (at the house of--don't know how to say that really well in english) an aunt and uncle and cousins. Lots of dinners like that--good. I'm still a bit awkward with my cousins...not totally integrated into the family, but that takes time.
Monday I had a little cold so I came home and went to bed. Talked to my parents online which was nice.
Tuesday went to bed again...I wasn't very sick, but didn't feel like doing much active. I studied for my history test, which was wednesday, and I think it went pretty well. I had the same test as the rest of the class, but could use my notebook. Maybe the next test will be without any help of notes or book. eek! but I think I'm probably ready.
Yesterday after school I went to the older part of Lisbon (this was delayed by some nostalgia of my childhood--watched a show on the discovery channel about the excavation of an egyptian tomb (I wanted to be an archeologist/paleontologist when I was little)). I took public transport (which I'm getting pretty good at) and went to visit the circus school again (chapito.org if you want to see). sadly got the same information as before--classes are only late at night on school nights. It's a really cool place though; I'm sad I won't be able to practice there.
In english class we're reading "Brave New World" by Aldous Huxley. The rest of the class has a smaller, easier version but I'm reading the original one. It's interesting...but when I read it I get into a sort of "English world" and then portuguese seems funny to hear. same with TV in english. It's like a mental adjustment.
Last night i had a dream and I can't determine if it was in english or portuguese. I'm really hoping to start dreaming in portuguese! I dreampt I got married which was quite weird.
Anyways, jantar! (dinner!) TTFN

  • If it makes you feel any better, it got down to 3 degrees last night! But at least we have heat. Love your descriptions of English-Portuguese confusion--I think that's a sign you're really getting integrated! Obidos sounds cool--your kind of place. Please don't get married this year--I wouldn't want to miss the wedding! xxx
