Italia e neve!
Italy and snow is the title!
I just got back yesterday from a fun week in Italy skiing!
first of all...Friday night I went to Catarina's birthday dinner, which was good. I saw some friends of hers who I hadn't really talked to since the beginning of the year, and one of them said that he thought I had changed a lot, which made me happy.
Saturday was xuxu's birthday, so we banged more pan lids (not at 7 in the morning this time, though). Then got packed and we went to the airport.
After a 2 hour flight to Milan and a 6 hour bus ride to the north of italy, we arrived at our hotel at about 2 in the morning. Had a dinner they had provided for us, then went to bed. It was a really nice hotel--I was in a room with Liz from California, the other AFSer there with her host family, which is good friends with mine.
So every day afterwards we went skiing. I went with the adult group because I was so out of practice--had some quite embarrassing falls (didn't get hurt at all though). I would have liked to go with the rest of the teenagers (there were a lot!) but I thought it was a bit too much pressure--they were all really good. By the end of the week I'd gotten a lot better, though, and was doing reds (medium difficulty, but they were pretty hard) with hardly any problems.
Tuesday was carnaval and there was a little party in the hotel. My host dad dressed up as obelix which was really funny. There was dancing and things (though I've found I don't really like dancing that much if there's no real structure to it). Some people that day had been dressed up on the slopes too (we saw a great cruella devil and dalmations and some nuns. Liz's host sister wore a shower cap and a bathrobe, and some other people from our group dyed their hair).
We also played a lot of cards at night, which was fun. it was a fun group, but by the time I had finally learned almost everyone's name, the week was over. Not a lot of chances to make friends because i hardly knew anyone. But it was fun anyways.
One day we went for lunch to Austria which was really cool! I can say I've skiied to Austria hehe. Everyone in Italy (and Austria) spoke Italian or italian and german--hardly any english, which was quite hard. Some people in our group spoke a bit of italian. i practiced things like "prego! latte, per favore." Learned a bit which was fun. i can actually read some italian now that I'm learning portuguese, which is really cool. Liz and I tried to watch TV in italian but it was kind of hard to understand. We got a couple words though!
I also found my italian hot chocolate which was very good. and croissants every day for breakfast and pasta all the time! I thought the food was good.
So at 4 in the morning on Saturday we finally got on the bus (we'd been waiting since 3) and drove to the airport another 6 hours. then a plane and taxi home. I was quite sad to leave--I would have liked to spend more time there. I think I take a while to make friends, so a week wasn't long enough to get to know people well enough.
But oh well, life goes on. School tomorrow yikes!
i'll try to put up some pix. Right now the photo site is a bit jumbled because I'm in the middle of posting pix, so sorry about that!
ciao e chau! (italian and portuguese)

Glad you had a great time skiing! As a teen living iverseas I was very spoiled and went skiing in the Alps every winter. We mostly went to Saas Fe (spelling?). Great times and always sad when the week was over.
